(Dan Tri) - As soon as he landed in Bangkok, returning to the country after 15 years of living in exile, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was taken by police to the Supreme Court to carry out legal procedures.

At around 9:25 a.m. today, August 22, local time, a private plane carrying former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra landed at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok.

The plane was supposed to depart from Singapore this morning and land in Thailand about an hour and a half later.

At the airport, he waved to supporters and bowed before a portrait of the King of Thailand.

He then went to greet a number of politicians, mainly Pheu Thai party parliamentarians, who were also waiting at the airport terminal.

On social networks, Pheu Thai party prime ministerial candidate Srettha Thavisin sent congratulations: `Congratulations to the Shinawatra family and former Prime Minister Thaksin. Returning to your hometown to reunite with your family, there is no greater happiness.`

Thai police previously said that as soon as he lands at the airport, Mr. Thaksin will be taken to the Supreme Court before being transferred to a detention camp while awaiting legal procedures.

Mr. Thaksin, 74 years old, decided to return home despite facing the risk of being sentenced to prison due to charges of corruption, abuse of power and tax evasion.

According to updated information from Thailand’s Khaosod newspaper, at about 10:25 a.m., about an hour after former Prime Minister Thaksin’s plane landed at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, the police escorted him to Court.

According to Thai media, Mr. Thaksin was taken to the Supreme Court to confirm he was a wanted person under a court order.

If convicted, Mr. Thaksin could be sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Mr. Thaksin was Thailand’s prime minister from 2001 to 2006, before being overthrown in a mutiny in September 2006.
